thats awesome...

they said it was by using fiber-optics? wouldnt a giant webcam be easier? (cheaper too)

Yes. Transatlantic fiber optics cables have been in place since 1988. And it's actually less expensive than the old copper wire telephone technology. There's tons of other benefits as well.
